The General Committee of the General People’s Congress (GPC) in Sanaa has announced the dismissal of Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, son of the late former president, from his leadership position as the party’s third deputy chairman. He had been appointed to the post years ago but never carried out his duties from the party’s headquarters in the capital

According to the party’s official website Al-Motamar Net, the committee — the GPC’s highest political authority — voted unanimously to remove Saleh’s son from office. The move was based on a previous organizational resolution authorizing the party leadership to take all necessary measures and disciplinary actions against those accused of seeking to divide or undermine the party, in line with its internal regulations

The decision marks a further sidelining of the former president’s family from the leadership of the party he founded in the early 1980s and led until his death at the hands of his onetime Houthi allies on December 4, 2017

Political sources indicate that the Houthis were behind the move, which comes a year after the lifting of UN sanctions against Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had been accused of obstructing Yemen’s political process

Throughout Yemen’s years of turmoil, Saleh’s son has largely remained silent, though he was recently seen attending his siblings’ wedding in Cairo last month

The Houthis, meanwhile, launched a wave of arrests in Sanaa targeting senior GPC figures just days before the party’s 43rd anniversary. The crackdown prompted the GPC to cancel its celebrations, while Ahmed Ali Saleh issued a statement condemning the abuses against party leaders in Houthi-controlled areas

The GPC, which governed Yemen throughout the presidency of Ali Abdullah Saleh, has since endured a series of political and organizational setbacks. From its alliance with the Houthis in toppling the capital in September 2014, to its subsequent fragmentation, the party has splintered into several competing factions both inside and outside Yemen
